Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - An emotional day in Clay County court today: A father admits his responsibility for his 5-month-old daughter's death.
Andrew Sandstrom pleaded guilty Friday. He says he fell asleep inside his apartment for four hours while the baby girl was left in a hot vehicle.
After pleading guilty, Andrew Sandstrom took the stand and broke down admitting that his actions cost his 5-month-old daughter her life.
Baby Christiana died after she was left in the family van for four hours on a hot day in June.
Her father was sleeping inside the apartment.
When asked if he acknowledged his actions caused her death, Sandstrom said, "Yes, and I am her father. I should have been the first one to protect her."
The state recommends a sentence of one year in local jail, though the charge is punishable by up to 10 years.
Brian Melton- Clay County Attorney: "It's a difficult case, obviously. I think you can see from the plea and from Mr. Sandstrom's reaction he knows he's responsible. He knows what he did is wrong, but he is also still the parent of a child and still has other children he's responsible to take care of."
The other five children Sandstrom has with his wife Shayna are now back home after being taken into protective custody following the incident.
We asked Sandstrom for a comment today. He declined.
A sentencing is scheduled for December 13th.
If the judge decides the recommended sentence of one year is not enough, Sandstrom has the option to retract his guilty plea and plead not guilty.
