Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - You may have seen more of the color pink popping up on store shelves or at NFL games.
The color for breast cancer awareness month seems to be everywhere, but many pink ribbon products don't necessarily help the cause.
Everybody knows the pink ribbon.
Pink socks, pink shirts, even food products with a pink ribbon emblazoned on the package - all in the name of breast cancer awareness.
But some question how much stores saturated with pink are really helping.
Lisa Verworn, breast cancer survivor: "I think there are a lot of businesses that are probably profiting off “the pink drive” as we call it."
Lisa Verworn was diagnosed with breast cancer six years ago.
As a survivor, she feels empowered when she wears pink, or sees others wearing it during October, but says people should think about exactly what they're buying.
Verworn: "I wonder where they bought it from. Did any of that money go for research or helping somebody else? And I'm not afraid to ask somebody that question, because it's not helping us."
The Better Business Bureau warns of 'pinkwashing,' where little to no money from pink products actually goes to cancer-related charities. They say to look for labels on the products or on the company website to find out exactly where the money is going."
Still, some say they believe in the power of pink.
Verworn: "I think there can never be enough awareness about something that's such a huge issue."
While Verworn says the push for awareness and early detection is important, it doesn't compare to beating the disease for good.
Verworn: "We need to find a cure. I want to find a cure in my lifetime. And the only way to find a cure is with research."
