First Down Friday: Week 6

WDAY TV - Welcome to the wet and wild edition of First Down Friday.

Shanley vs. Wahpeton

Wahpeton, ND (WDAY TV) - Tough conditions for all teams as we near the end of the regular season just two weeks to go for some teams, making tonight's showdown at Shanley even bigger as the defending champion Deacons had a chance to make a statement, in the rain, hosting 4th-ranked and unbeaten Wahpeton.

First quarter: Wahpeton goes with a screen pass involved their two main guys, Jack Christensen to Brock Lingen, and Lingen has a convoy down the sideline for a 53-yard gain to the Deacon 12, but Shanley would later intercept a Husky pass to keep them from scoring...

Move to the 2nd: Jack Christiansen is rolling out of the pocket. He's under pressure and he's picked off by Alex Conner, and he's got a convoy. He rumbles down to the 6-yard line...

The Deacons convert on 4th and goal from the one. Shanley goes for it and it's Alex Berg converting; 7-0 Shanley at halftime...

Same score in the 4th quarter, when Shanley ices it. Peter Simon breaks loose for a 25-yard touchdown scamper; 13-0 Deacons...

That's your final... What a performance by the Deacon D, holding high-powered Wahp to zero points...

Moorhead vs. Fergus Falls

Fergus Falls, MN (WDAY TV) - In Minnesota, Moorhead going for a 2nd straight win took on Fergus Falls.

This is Tyler Eidsness up the gut for a 1-yard score. Look at the facemask; that's not nice.

14-0 Spuds early in the 2nd quarter.

Shortly after Brady Andersen comes off the edge of this Otter punt, blocks the punt, scoops and scores.

Now 21-0 Moorhead.

Otters would get on the board, right before half Austin Rund finds Drew Pearson for this 10-yard fade;

Pearson lays out great catch.

21-7 at half.

South vs. Central

4th-ranked South trying to bounce back on the road at Central....

James Johanneson with a 45-yard TD run...

Here's another Johannson run; this one 50 yards… 14-0 South.

Johanneson: 13 rush, 247 yds, 3 TDs (all in 1st half).

South cruises 50-6.

Devils Lake vs. Davies

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Davies has been red-hot; winners of 3-straight going for number 4 hosting Devils Lake.

After falling behind 7-0, Davies rebounded, thanks to Jordan Jelseth. He returns the kickoff 80 yards for the score, breaking a tackle then showing the speed. Eagles missed the PAT, though, and trailed 7-6...

Still in the first quarter, Davies Alek Groth with the nice carry...25 yards, all the way down to the 6....(it set up another TD)... Davies up 14-7.

And the Eagles go on to win 43-7.

Red River vs. North

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - North still searching for win number 1; hosted Red River.

Turnovers were the story of half 1...

Red River's Chad Bartosh goes to the air and is picked off by North's Calvin Nordsletten...

Then, it was Red River's turn...

North tries the screen, but Jacob Robson reads it perfectly, leaping to intercept Mike Boutain, but neither team scored off the combined 4 first half turnovers...

The only scoring came on this play. The North snap sails over the punter's head. Seth Brenneman smartly knocks it out of the end zone for a safety…

2-0 Red River at halftime...They go on to win 16-0.

Grafton vs. Central Cass

Central Cass had a chance to get to 500, hosting 2A power Grafton.

It was all Squirrels in this one, already leading 12-0...

The give to big number 56, Connor Reiniets. He scores from 8 yards out diving in; 20-0 after that...

Later, Central Cass goes to the air. Kyle Schultz avoids the pressure, then floats it to Ryan Nelson who makes a great move to avoid the Spoilers...

He jumps into the end zone; 28-0...

Squirrels like the rain, they win 28-2. There were 4 safeties in the game.

Breckenridge vs. Hawley

Hawley, MN (WDAY TV) - Hawley has risen to 3 in the state rankings, hosting Breckenridge.

And Breck with a huge win, stunning unbeaten Hawley 7-6.

Upsala- Swanville vs. Barnesville

Right behind Hawley is Barnesville, ranked 5, taking on Upsala-Swanville...

It was a historic night for a historic player. In typical Michael Strand fashion, he wastes no time taking this 40-yard hand-off all the way to the house and in the process, becomes Barnesville's all-time leading rusher.

Later in the first quarter, now it's the other half of Barnesville's two-headed running attack: Jace Nosal smashing his way through defenders and into the end zone; gave Barnesville a 12-0 lead and they wouldn't look back as they win big tonight.

Win-E-Mac vs. W-A-O

Warren, MN (WDAY TV) - Great 9 man game tonight, 10th ranked Win-E-Mac facing W-A-O....

Patriots running back Devin Fall-det takes it in from 3 yards out to make it a six-nothing Win-E-Mac lead…

Ponies answer trailing 12 to nothing.

Fall-det was just too much tonight.

He takes it in from 32 yards on the far side to make it 20 to six right before the break…

And Win-E-Mac cruises to victory; 32-12.

Underwood vs. Hillscrest

Hillscrest, ND (WDAY TV) - Always a fun one when Hillcrest takes on Underwood...

Rockets all over the comets early in this one. Noah Thompson breaks a tackle and he's off to the races; 70 yards. No one is going to touch him.

7-0 after this.

Thompson would add another on the next drive to make it 14-0 Underwood.

First spark for Hillscrest comes when Adam Creek bootlegs to the left; his pass hangs in the wind and Comets' Evan Malmstrom is there for the interception.
