Hawley, MN (WDAY TV) - Trying to prevent accidents like this, Minnesota is kicking off a campaign; pushing teens to strap on their seat belts.

The 30-second video shows real students killed in accidents who didn't have their belts on, giving a real feel to the dangers of not wearing it.

A Hawley teen knows all too well how scary rolling a vehicle can be.

You might remember Jordan Bortnem. Just six weeks ago, he totaled his truck. The 16-year-old was life-flighted to Sanford, but in the end he was OK… And his family is thankful.

Lisa Bortnem-Wiser: "I didn't get that much sleep that night."

It was in-between the fear,

Bortnem: "I was on my way to football practice."

the panic,

Bortnem-Wiser: "I went to go to football practice, it was 5 O'clock in the morning. And I fell asleep while I was driving."

and the crunching metal,

Bortnem: "I crawled out and got life-flighted to the hospital."

that 16-year-old Jordan Bortnem found himself alive.

Bortnem: "I broke my leg in a car accident."

It was likely still dark; the sun still rising when his mother found out.

"Talked about his car, and I asked him if he was OK and he said fine, but I wrecked my car."

Lisa Bortnem rushed to the hospital thankful her son was wearing his seatbelt.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah it could have been worse."

For other families it is.

Between 2010 and 2012, 852 drivers were killed on Minnesota roads. 42% of them found not wearing their seatbelts; 171 were under the age of 30.

So today, in between punts, play and passes, Jordan Bortnem watches his team warm up; frustrated he can't play, but thankful

Bortnem: "Saved me, so I probably should wear it."

his life line allowed him to live.

Jordan is up and walking now.

In a crash, odds are six times greater for injury if you're not buckled up.
