Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Hospitals in Liberia are getting desperately-needed supplies from Fargo-Moorhead.
Friday, members of the United Nimba Citizen's Council picked up more than 5,000 pounds of supplies to send overseas.
The Healthcare Equipment Recycling Organization, or HERO, collects the excess supplies from local hospitals.
Liberia is still recovering from a 14-year Civil War that ended in 2003, and hospitals lack even basic medical supplies.
Jesse Mongue- Communication Director: "Most of the time it's a matter of improvisation. They don't have it. They try to do the best they can to serve the needs of the people who most need it."
The supplies HERO gives away are already paid for by insurance, but not used by the patient.
They cannot be paid for twice, so local hospitals can't use them for another patient.
