Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Countless questions have been brewing surrounding Sanford's new South Fargo medical center. When will it open? And what will it look like?
Sanford's nearly $500 million project is still on budget and on schedule. And from all the way up here, you can't really tell just how big the new building will be.
Dennis Millirons- Sanford Medical Center President: "There's a huge hole out behind this building here and what it is is where this entire building will fit; and it is literally, if you take Target Field, Target Field can fit into that hole."
Right now, all of the steel pilings for the building are in place, and Sanford is showing off its final designs complete with a classic, collegiate gothic style and one million square feet.
Dan Noble- HKS Director of Design: "This is the largest healthcare project we have on the boards right now."
It's actually one of the top 10 healthcare projects in terms of cost and size in the whole country with nearly 400 beds and 30 operating rooms; all slated to serve patients beginning in 2016 or 17.
Millirons: "It's classic. It's something people stick in their minds.”
Noble: “When people come in, it's a more inviting, less institutional, type of atmosphere. Parking is convenient; drop-offs are intuitive and easy to find."
Construction will take a break this winter, then foundation work will begin this spring.
Drivers on I-94 in South Fargo should start to see a steel structure go up in the summer.
