Henning, MN (WDAY TV) - Suddenly losing more than 50-thousand dollars of hard earned cash would be a setback to most people.
It's reality for a Henning man - after 55 head of cattle are stolen.
The rancher, who wishes to remain anonymous for fear more of his cattle will be stolen, says he can't believe someone would actually steal another person's livelihood.
It's like a game of monopoly, only difference is, it's with real money.
Rancher: "It's going to be a huge hit on my paycheck."
Sometime within the last week 55 head of cattle were taken near this Henning Property.
Rancher: "I weaned my calves about 12 days ago, I went to bring them home. I did a count on my calves and realized I was 32 calves short so I went and checked my cows and realized I was 23 cows short. "
Just as in the game of Clue, questions loom.
Rancher: “Who took my cattle? How did they do it?"
The rancher has a hunch it happened at night, within the span of 10 minutes.
Rancher: "In the farming community your word is better than your checkbook. Your word is your word, you don't steal it."
Unfortunately, someone did. In just 40 days the rancher was looking to sell the calves, bringing in at least 24-thousand dollars.
Rancher: "That would have been the profit for the year, so I have no profit to live on."
Lost profit and a shaken up livelihood, the rancher says he'll have to get another job off the farm to pay bills.
Rancher: "If I sell my cows to cover this loss, then I have less calves next year, so it's a catch 22."
Leaving him asking, where's his get out of jail free card?
