Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - This story has some people with sliding glass doors on alert.

Police don't know if the door was locked, but sliding doors can be easy to break into.

They are common in apartments and homes.

But locking a sliding glass door may not be enough if someone really wants to get in.

It was a nightmare for two Grand Forks women, when a man entered their apartment through the sliding glass door, robbed them, and raped them.

Here in Fargo, Chantal Kraemer says it's something many young women living on their own fear she and her roommate live in a first floor apartment.

Chantal Kraemer- Fargo Resident: "So, what we do is we have latch that goes down and then also a wooden stick that goes between the door and the wall."

Sliding glass doors can be easy to break into.

Many people block the door with a rod or baseball bat. And while that helps, it doesn't prevent one of the most common ways of breaking into these doors.

Brad Bushaw- Minnkota Windows: "The most common I believe is simply lifting the door off of the track."

Brad Bushaw at Minnkota Windows says one way to prevent an intruder prying the door away is with a lock that hooks both upward and downward.

Bushaw: "That prevents the door from being lifted up also the mechanism that the lock engages when it's closed and locked you should have long screws that actually go into the stud and opening rather just into the frame of the door."

Another precaution is a footbolt that locks a door in place when it is cracked open to let the air in.

And there are more secure alternatives to sliding glass.

This is called a "euro-door." It bolts shut with 12 different locking points.

But no matter what kind of door you have, making sure it is locked in the first place is a huge leap toward security.

Kraemer: "We always make sure both doors are locked, even when we are home."

Another simple but important thing to do is keep the blinds closed.

That way, no one can see inside or know if there is a person on the other side of the door.
