GRAND FORKS, ND - Grand Forks police say a man broke into an apartment early Monday, showed a gun and then robbed and sexually assaulted two women before fleeing.

No suspect has been identified or caught by late Monday afternoon, said Lt. Jim Remer, so he is seeking the public’s help.

The attacker was described as a black man in his early 20s, about 6 feet 1 inch tall and heavyset — weighing 200 to 230 pounds — wearing a black jacket and pants and a dark shirt.

The women told police their attacker had a tattoo of cursive writing on the back of his right hand and another tattoo on the front and right side of his abdomen.

The man entered through a sliding glass door at the women’s apartment in the 3400 block of 13th Avenue North, just a block or so south of the Simplot factory on Gateway Drive, about 2 a.m., Monday. He demanded money from the women and sexually assaulted them, Remer said.

The women were taken to Altru Hospital for exams as part of the investigation but did not need treatment for any serious physical injury.

Investigators also gathered some “pretty general” information about a possible vehicle the man was using, Remer said.

It doesn’t appear any similar crimes have been reported recently in the community matching these specifics, according to the preliminary investigation, he said.

Anyone with information should call police at (701) 787-8000, or email investigate@grandforksgov.com or send a text message with the word “Tipster” along with the text to 847411 (TIP411).
