Detroit Lakes, MN (WDAY TV) - For many of us when we think of dogs, we think slobber and playing fetch, but a program in Detroit Lakes is showing that dogs can do much more.

The Patriot Assistance Dog Program started only two years ago and it's already seen many remarkable success stories.

Bradley Livingston has had some big numbers in his life-- 23 years in the Army Reserve, 3 completed tours, and one year in the Gulf War.

Bradley Livingston- Veteran: "I've seen a lot"

But the most important number in his life has been the one year he has spent with his Patriot Assistance Dog, Roxie.

Meet Roxie, the 3 year old Belgian Malinois, who is more than just a dog to Bradley, she is the reason he is alive.

Livingston: "Good girl, are you a good girl?"

People with PTSD commonly suffer with some medical issues.

Livingston: "Nightmares at night are common, she'll wake me up when I have my nightmares, we will go outside and come back in."

It is Roxie's job to make life easier for Bradley.

Livingston: "I can go in crowds now, and I can actually go see my daughter in plays or whatever she is doing in school, where I'd never be there before."

So while many say they are man's best friend Bradley says.

Livingston: "Over there we have battle buddies, we have somebody that helps us, I mean there at all times. Roxie, she is the only thing that gives you unconditional love."
