Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The Grand Forks County Sheriff's Department is now authorized to begin training to operate unmanned aircrafts at night.

It's only the second law enforcement agency in the nation able to do so.

Sheriff Bob Rost says the flights will never be used for routine patrol.

In the past, flights have aided in the search for suspects on the run.

Bob Rost, Grand Forks County Sheriff: "It's huge for the University of North Dakota. It's huge for the Grand Forks County Sheriff's Department knowing that we're only one of two, and we're going to be on the cutting edge of being able to utilize an aircraft at night like this."

North Dakota is bidding to become one of six FAA test sites for unmanned aircraft systems.
