BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota State and North Dakota State coaches didn't expect much from the Dakota Marker after the trophy was unveiled in 2004 during a sparse news conference at the border town of Hankinson, N.D.

SDSU Head Coach John Stiegelmeier says the Jackrabbits at the time didn't have a conference and didn't have a rival, so he wondered if the annual game would ever amount to much.

Stiegelmeier says the matchup has become "an unbelievable rivalry."

The trophy mimics the quartzite monuments that used to mark the border between the two states.

NDSU Head Coach says so many people said it was crazy to move up to Division I and that it wasn't going to work and the schools were losing traditional rivalries.

Bohn says it's now "a big, big deal."
