First Down Friday: Week 5

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Showdown edition of First Down Friday; those guys just a few years away from playing on Friday nights. Some terrific games Friday night, including a showdown in the Heart O'Lakes, but first the longest winning streak in North Dakota was on the line.

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Showdown edition of First Down Friday; those guys just a few years away from playing on Friday nights. Some terrific games Friday night, including a showdown in the Heart O'Lakes, but first the longest winning streak in North Dakota was on the line.

Bismarck vs. Fargo South

As two-time defending state champion Bismarck came east to take on number 3 ranked South; the Bruins trying to end the Demons’ 21 game winning streak.

What a start in this one; the all-world running back James Johannssen starts things off for the Bruins with this run. He goes 55 yards past the Demons defense; what a night for the junior back? 7-0 Bruins.

Bismarck answers to tie the game at 7, but on the ensuing kickoff, look at Ty Brooks. He takes it and shows off his speed, blasting through the middle and past everyone. This goes 90 yards to the house.

South up 15-7.

Bismarck scores again, now 15-13. Johanssen does it again. This run goes deep into Demon territory, sets up another touchdown run from number 33, South led 28-20 at the break.

Hawley vs. DGF

Glyndon, MN (WDAY TV) - Another great matchup in Glyndon as 10th ranked DGF welcomed number 3 Hawley.

Nuggets start fast. The handoff to Chris Buttke and he's gone; 40 yards to the land of six. Butke rushed for 138 yards. Hawleyup 7-0.

DGF responds in the 2nd quarter with its "main man," Chad Johnson. Johnson, who ran for 144 yards, scores here and ties the game up at 7.

Hawley strikes right before the break. Jordan Harms with the strike to Aaron Regnier, 8 yard touchdown.14-7 Nuggets at the break.

Now 21-7 in the 4th, they pull away. Harms, this time, connects with Ben Ellefson, who drags his defender a couple of yards into the end zone.

West Fargo vs. Devils Lake

Devils Lake, ND (WDAY TV) - West Fargo has found its stride, going for a 3rd straight win, tonight at Devils Lake.

Devils lake up 7-nothing. Jacob Hoy with the equalizer. He finds Alexander Talley for the 5 yard TD on 4th and goal… Game tied at 7.

Second half, West Fargo took over. Packers down by a point midway through the third, but Sam Olsen rumbles through the Devils Lake defense. He loses the ball, but the refs ruled he crossed the goal line.

The 11-yard score puts the Packers up 19-14.

North Fargo vs. Central

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - North still searching for win number one on the road at Central.

Third down for the Knights, trying to get something going on offense. Central QB Jake Mussman scrambling for his life. And he's going to be rolled by North's Sam Bernston and Michael Schatzke. Knights drive would end there; scoreless after quarter one.

In the 2nd, Spartan offense gets moving on the last play from scrimmage in the first half. Quarterback Avery Thompson heaves it for Mike Boutain who makes the grab at the one and can't quite get in.

Jamestown vs. Century

Bismarck, ND (WDAY TV) - Out west, Jamestown went for the upset of 2nd ranked Century.

Second quarter, 7-0 Century when Dalton Feeney finds Andrew Steinwand on the sideline. Steinwand nearly breaks away before Jamestown's Logan Anderson comes from behind and strips the ball. Blue Jays recover.

And they'd capitalize on the turnover, as Ross Monson drops back and finds Anderson for the long touchdown. Jamestown down 7-6 at that point.

Central Cass vs. Wahpeton

Wahpeton, ND (WDAY TV) - Good 2-A battle had 4th ranked Wahpeton taking on Central Cass.

On Wahpeton's first possession, Jack Christensen scrambles and finds Carson Zarak, who tiptoes the sideline and gets in. 6-0 Huskies.

Later, now 12-0, Christensen fakes the dives and keeps it for another touchdown. 20-0 Wahpeton in the first quarter.

Central Cass was in great position to get points, after Ryan Nelson blocks the punt and the Squirrels recover deep in Husky territory, but they'd turn it over on the next play.

This one was all Wahpeton. They win 48-8.

Shanley vs. Kindred

Kindred, ND (WDAY TV) - Number 3 Shanley also on the road tonight taking on Kindred. 1st quarter, Shanley up 7.

Kindred's Eric Bachmeier goes 65 yards for the TD; missed the extra point. 7-6 Deacons.

2nd quarter, Shanley up 14-6. The Deacons' Danny Stasch goes 39-yards, down to the 5 yard line.

2 plays later, Stasch finishes the job. 21-6 Deacon lead.

Detroit Lakes vs. East Grand Forks

East Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) - Detroit Lakes up to 6 in the state rankings; took on East Grand Forks.

The handoff goes to Jarett Nozzle and the 200-pound fullback has some moves.

He rumbles 45 yards to make it a 14-0 Detroit Lakes lead. Nozzle carried 10 times for 164 yards.

Second quarter, EGF trying to get something started on defense.

Wave QB Trevor Selk is picked off by Ryan Cihak, an absolutely incredible grab by the junior.

DL wins 28-6 with 2 TDs, Michael Herzog becomes the Lakers all-time leading scorer tonight.

Maple Valley-Enderlin vs. Valley City

Valley City, ND (WDAY TV) - Back to North Dakota, Maple Valley-Enderlin visiting Valley City for homecoming.

2nd Quarter, Hi-Liner up 20, but the Falcons roll the dice on 4th and short; the give to Corby Richman and he finds daylight and makes a couple guys miss and outraces the defense for a 55 yard touchdown.

Valley City answers right back though. Dustin Lindgren on the give up the middle.

He scores from 9 yards out.

Fosston vs. Lake Park-Audubon

Lake Park, MN (WDAY TV) - Nice start to the year for LPA at 3-1, taking on Fosston.

Slippery playing conditions tonight causing a lot of fumbles, but not here. Early first quarter, it’s Taylor Briard taking it in from 6 yards out giving the Raiders an early 7-0 lead.

9 minutes to go in the second now; Fosston battling back as Jon Olson scampers in from nine yards out. Fosston would miss the extra point and trail 7-6.

Richland vs. Oak Grove

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - North Dakota 9-man had Oak Grove welcoming Richland.

Scoreless into the 2nd quarter, home team strikes first, Christian Adams scores from 3 yards out. 6-0 Grovers.

Back come the Colts in the terrific powder blues. Matt Workin with the pump fake and goes deep for Brady Heyen. He connects from 31 yards out. Richland ties the game up at 6 late 1st half.
