Kindred, ND (WDAY TV) - A remarkable hunting and life experience is going on this weekend southwest of Kindred, North Dakota.
For the last 16 years, volunteers have set up camp for a special deer hunt for those living with a physical disability.
About time, I guess. Nate Aalgaard of Moorhead prepares for his first white-tail deer hunt. Deep in the woods southwest of Kindred, he will join another dozen hunters with disabilities in the Twist of Fate Hunt.
Shortly before the hunt, Nate and his hunting guide Bruce Eggen of West Fargo practice near the camp.
It was back in 1977 that Nate was paralyzed in a bad car accident. Now at 54, hunting is something on his bucket list he wants to check off. Twist of Fate is helping him make that happen.
Nate Aalgaard- Twist of Fate Hunter: “It will be a weekend to visit with others who may be here for the first time, as well; all of them anxious to get out for the deer hunt. This once-a-year event that brings able-bodied volunteers out to the woods to help someone with a dream.”
Aalgaard: “They try to eliminate barriers for you and they just want everyone to have a chance; an equal shot, so to speak.”
Bruce Eggen- Guide for Nate: “It is just kind of nice to do something nice for someone else once in a while. Everyone has a story. Nate has a story; I have a story why I am here, and everybody else does, too. And everyone gets a lot out of this by the time you leave here Sunday.”
And so last weekend, some of the hunters with their mentors came out here and scoped out the best hunting land; some of the land donated by area hunters for Twist of Fate.
In a stiff, warm wind, Nate and Bruce headed out to the blind. It will be a wait, this first hunt, but it will be memorable for its independence won here.
And how about this for luck? On his first hunt; his first hour, Nate got his deer. A doe. Now he doesn't have to wake up early for a hunt in the morning.
