Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Elder abuse is on the rise across the nation and in Fargo.

Fargo Police announced today they will assign one detective to work almost exclusively on crimes against the elderly.

This comes as burglary and theft charges were filed against an employee of Edgewood Vista in Fargo.

Chief Keith Ternes hopes the move will help put a spotlight on a complex problem.

Keith Ternes- Fargo Police Chief: "We want to attack this problem and send a very strong message that those adults are going to get our extra attention in terms of providing protection that they need. And for those who are preying upon elderly or vulnerable adults, they can expect a prompt response from us."

Police also say to keep in mind that mistreatment takes many forms including physical, verbal and financial abuse.
