West Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - A group of West Fargo 7th Graders is featured in TIME for Kids magazine.

They gained fame after creating a recycling app that's getting national attention.

It all began last November when a group of STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – students entered a Verizon Innovative App Challenge.

"I think it's really special for a 7th grader to be in a magazine, known nationally."

"I think it's very amazing that it's gone this far."

Not only are the students pumped about the magazine, they say family and friends are as well.

"They think it's one of the coolest things we could ever do."

The idea for the app called 'Recycling Bin' was a simple concept.

"We were supposed to pick a problem or need in our school or community and recycling has always been a problem. I like recycling and I think it's a good thing to do."

The app is fairly basic.

"You can click search map, which will then let you click current location and find all the recycling bins nearby."

Or how about setting an alarm to remind you when to recycle.

"We thought if people just knew how and where to recycle that would save the earth and a bunch of money too."

The students submitted their app idea and received best in state, and beat out hundreds of other groups to win Best in Nation. Aside from national recognition they were awarded Samsung tablets - a school grant and professional app training.

"It's pretty amazing cause if you think about it we were just this tiny little school and then we did this."

This may not be the last you hear of local STEM Students paving the way. Gretchen Peterson, the teacher whom heads up the program says a new group of students are already creating a new app to enter in this year’s contest.

The app is only offered in the Google play store. It now has more than one thousand plus downloads. To read the TIME for Kids article, head to our website at
