BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A man on trial in the slaying of another man on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation wants jurors to find that he acted in self-defense.

Waylon Hicks has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the July 2012 stabbing death of 30-year-old Jeremiah Sage, of Halliday, at the New Town Marina.

Hicks is accused of stabbing Sage in the heart multiple times and slashing his throat after the two left a New Town bar. Authorities allege Hicks admitted to killing Sage after Sage tried to sexually assault him. Authorities found Sage's vehicle engulfed in flames, with his body inside burned beyond recognition.

Hicks is on trial in federal court in Bismarck. KXMB-TV reports that his defense attorney told jurors in her opening statement that Hicks was defending himself.
