West Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - West Fargo's rapid rise is now gaining state-wide recognition.
The "City on the Grow" can now also call itself North Dakota's "City of the Year."
City officials say they've applied for the award several years but this is the very first time that they've won. And say it's the city's growth in its schools, subdivisions, businesses and parks that really set it on top.
Jim Brownlee, West Fargo City Administrator: "(It’s) just really nice to get that recognition that they think we did the best job."
West Fargo is the North Dakota League of Cities 2013 City of the Year, making it the best city in state.
In addition to nearly doubling its population in the past decade, West Fargo has added nearly 20 new subdivisions, approved an 82 million dollar bond for education, and attracted a huge boom is business, landing it first place at the league's banquet in Bismarck.
Brownlee: "They started reading some of the stuff and everybody goes, oh they must be out west somewhere, they must be in the oil patch, they must be talking about Williston or Dickinson. So it was really surprising when they read our names and everyone goes, woah they're doing that well in West Fargo."
And when it comes to next year, Brownlee says the city has big plans, but will give another city a shot at winning.
Mayor Mattern accepted the award over the weekend.
