Washington, D.C. (WDAY TV) - The death toll at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. is at 12, plus the suspected gunman.

Authorities identified him as 34-year-old Aaron Alexis. Defense officials say he was working as a defense department contractor, and in that position, he could have gotten a badge to get access to the Navy Yard.

A witness says he saw Alexis down a long third-floor hallway in building 197. He says Alexis just turned and started firing.

Another witness was standing outside the building when the person next to him was shot in the head.

Commander Tim Jirus- U.S. Navy: “We had two gun shots that happened near us; one hit him and he fell down and I ran from there after that.”

Alexis was involved in a past shooting incident in Seattle.

He was a former Navy reservist, serving from 2007 to early 2011 at Fort Hood, Texas.

Authorities still don't have a motive.
