Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) - About 350 Special Olympics athletes are competing in a soccer and bocce tournament in Grand Forks this weekend.
The games at Bringewatt Park bring together all athletes; not just those with special needs.
Some athletes from this tournament have a chance to advance to the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games in New Jersey.
Grand Forks’ Special Olympics gold medalist Tommy Mikkelson is competing Saturday. As the North Dakota male athlete of the year, Mikkelson lit the torch during opening ceremonies Saturday afternoon.
Tommy Mikkelson- Special Olympics Athlete: "It's going to be a great tournament and let's go have fun, teammates. No matter what, we're still in this together no matter what happens."
Robert Johnson- Special Olympics Athlete: "What I want to say to my team: Keep on winning and I hope they get first place all the way."
The tournament wraps up tomorrow with an awards ceremony at 1 p.m.
