Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - A few of the programs featured in the Senate-proposed farm bill were put into action in Fargo today.
North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp was on hand to teach families the importance of healthy nutrition.
It's part of the federal nutrition assistance education program, authorized by the farm bill.
Heitkamp explained the importance of buying healthy foods and healthy ways of cooking it.
Heidi Heitkamp, (D) North Dakota: “We talk about providing assistance to farmers in catastrophic losses, a lot of the folks experience a catastrophic economic event in their lives and the food stamp program is a way to bridge that catastrophic event for them.”
Last year in North Dakota, the family nutrition program provided direct education to more than 5,000 adults and 11,000 children.
