Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - A mysterious illness is killing honeybees across the nation, including here in North Dakota, the leading honey producers.

Julie Bowsher, an NDSU Biology professor spoke to a group of nearly 50 people tonight at a Science café meeting about what may be to blame for the disease.

Bowsher says Colony Collapse Disorder, where the working bees suddenly seem to disappear, has been spreading since 2006.

Julie Bowsher- Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences, NDSU: “We don't yet know what the real cause is and there may not be one cause. It may be a combination of many factors from disease to insecticide uses, land use and management practices.

Bowsher says, on average, honeybee producers are losing 30% of their bee colonies per year.
