Altru Announces Partnership With Mayo Clinic

Altru Health System has announced their partnership with what it describes as a world leader in health care, the Mayo Clinic.

Altru Health System has announced their partnership with what it describes as a world leader in health care, the Mayo Clinic.

The official announcement was made at Altru's annual meeting today in Grand Forks.

Altru Health System executives also stated what the affiliation will mean to its patients in northwestern Minnesota and northeastern North Dakota.

The affiliation is "based on collaboration, cooperation and what is best for the patient" Altru president Casey Ryan stated.

The agreement does not include a merger or a buyout. Altru will maintain local control over its operations and is not being acquired or becoming part of the Mayo Clinic.

David Herman, head of Mayo Clinic's board of governors, says Altru will likely add a tagline to its name to include the Mayo partnership, but says there is no timeline for that to occur.

“While others quickly consolidate to address health care reform and an uncertain reimbursement environment, at Mayo we are focused on further developing our integrated model of practice, education and research, as well as a range of external affiliations and relationships, to give more people seamless access to the knowledge and expertise of Mayo Clinic,” says John Noseworthy, M.D., president and CEO of Mayo Clinic.

“Altru physicians have long worked with our colleagues at Mayo Clinic, and this agreement is the natural next step in this relationship,” says Ryan, “Altru and Mayo share the commitment that health care should be provided close to home whenever possible. This affiliation means that Altru’s patients will have access to the highest level of clinical expertise.”

“We are proud to formalize our ongoing relationship with our colleagues at Altru Health System,” says David Herman, M.D., of the Mayo Clinic Board of Governors.

The Mayo Clinic has been on Fortune magazine's “100 Best Companies to Work For” in America list for eight years in a row.

The clinic started as a single, small outpatient facility, and later became America's first integrated group practice, a model that is now standard in the United States. However, Mayo Clinic integrates the practice of over 1,700 medical doctors, making it much larger than the typical group practice of 3 to 100 doctors.
