Wahpeton, ND (WDAY TV) - An investigation by North Dakota National Guard Officials about a young soldier’s death is underway; possibly a suicide.
It happened during Guard training this weekend in Wahpeton.
Captain Dan Murphy with the Guard says a lot of details are still vague at this point, but says an area soldier with the 188th Engineer Company, based out of Wahpeton and Oakes, is believed to have committed suicide during training.
The young man whose name is not yet being released has been in the Guard for less than six years, and was recently deployed to Kuwait in 2011.
Officials aren't releasing any circumstances surrounding the soldier's death, as the Wahpeton Police Department continues the investigation.
Captain Dan Murphy- Guard: “The reality is that yes, we have had soldiers take their lives and it really runs the spectrum of those who have deployed and those who have not; those who have had a little bit of time in service to those who have had a great deal of time in service. There are just a lot of variables involved in it.”
The 188th has about 160 Soldiers skilled primarily in construction trades.
Murphy says there is support available for other members of the 188th unit, including chaplains, social workers and mental health providers.
