Brent Hansen spent countless hours welding and creating an artistic fire pit, featuring a quarterback, a helmet, and, the NDSU BISON logo.

Disabled after a work related accident, he had hopes of selling his work.

That is, until he got a big thumbs down from NDSU and its licensing contractor.

Even on hot summer days, Brent Hansen of Horace can be found working his passion, welding works of art. Creating metal fire pits. And this Bison fire pit is his latest, but it might be his last piece featuring anything NDSU.

Then we have the controversy. The NDSU BISON, but it might be his last piece featuring anything NDSU.

Hansen: "The purpose of the pit was for the Bison to celebrate the bison they are champions."

Because Brent's fire pit features the NDSU logo and the word BISON. the university, after Brent called NDSU, said if he plans on selling these fire pits for profit, it is a violation of the licensing rules.

"I am not trying to step on anyone's toes, or skirt the market. I I just did it because it was cool."

Since going big time, NDSU's tolerance has gone down and surveillance has gone up of use of the NDSU logo.

Troy Goergen/NDSU Athletic Dept. "First and foremost to protect our brand. Our univeristy has grown in stature and so protect our brand is important not just the look of the logo but also how it is used where it is used."

Bison Tailgators have Bison logos on trucks and trailers and canopies. But those logos are supposed to come through NDSU approved printers and contractors.

Safest bet is to call the athletic office and ask the question before you duplicate the logo.

For now, Brent's wish of making money off his art while promoting his home town team

Granted they are a huge team, big team and we are proud to have them in the state of north dakota this was my way of showing it.

And has gone up in a welding flame.

Brent says even if he cannot sell the Bison Fire-pit, he will keep if for his own private use.
