Kids donate to Wahpeton Zoo

Wahpeton, ND (WDAY TV) - Tons of people packed the Chahinkapa Zoo Sunday afternoon, and not only to check out the animals, but to celebrate two small kids who've made a big difference by face painting.

Many kids might save up for their first toy or even collect their pennies so they can make it out to the zoo.

Johnny and Brad Meyer, two kids barely in their teens, racked up enough cash to keep these animals in the zoo.

Johnny Meyer- Raised Money for Zoo: "I've loved this zoo. I love looking at the animals."

It took not only one weekend, but a whole summer to get it done.

Meyer: "They have great animals here. I mean, even the Minnesota Zoo doesn't even have otters."

And it's the job they did that has the Chahinkapa Zoo director smiling.

Meyer: "I asked my grandma, ‘Do you have any face paintings?’"

Brad Meyer- Raised Money for Zoo: "We raised $1,302.82"

A number Kathy Diekman did not expect.

Kathy Diekman- Zoo Director: "I was happy that they had a good summer with it. I was happy that they reached out to a lot of people."

More than $1,000 was raised, which will feed more than 200 animals at the zoo.

Diekman: "This is going to help us like I can't even tell you. This is going to be amazing. We're going to be able to carry that enrichment through the winter."

For Brad, who's not even 10 and for his brother, Johnny, who's just 13:

Brad Meyer: "Then we're helping the animals."

Johnny Meyer: "For me, I like it when someone else is happy more than when I'm happy."

The Meyers kids say they plan to keep on face painting and donating money to non-profits.
