Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- The online version of The Oxford Dictionary is making a few additions to it's list of "official" words.

In the last 5-years, words like twitter, epic, and food baby have made it to that list.

A new piece of slang can pop up in one place, show up on Twitter, and eventually merit a scientific explanation. One of the words now added to that list Twerk.

Ann Wahlstrom: "Doesn't it mean like if you hurt someone or they are kind of a tween jerk maybe."

Chris Bodishbaugh: "It's a dance, it's just a movement, i don't know, it's a feeling, it's a lot of things."

Most people know it as the dance Miley Cyrus did during her eye popping performance at the VMA's.

Faye Stromberg: "It's definitely used a lot in social media right now."

But for those of you who don't... here is the definition from The Oxford Online Dictionary, "A dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance."

Reba Tschetter: They are just kind of pathetic words that are being added to the dictionary and it makes kind of our generation look bad.

The other word added to the list is Selfie. Every person I spoke to knew exactly what this one was. I guess with people doing it several times a day, it's hard not to.

Ann: "Selfie is a picture that you take of yourself with your cell phone in front of something else."

The Oxford Dictionary dates back 150 years and adds about 1 thousand new entries to it's online version every year. This version updates "current language" adding terms it's editors say have been absorbed by popular culture.

Ann: "New concepts come up and new technologies come up and as those things are alive on the scene we have to have words to use for them."

With the explosion of words like Twerk, with dozens of how to videos on the internet, and Selfie after selfie showing up on the masses of social media sites, it looks like words like Twerk and Selfie won't be the last to pop up on the ever growing list.

The print dictionary will not be adding the words.
