(WDAY TV) -- As you hit the road for the holiday weekend, Minnesota state troopers want to remind you to be safe.

Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest times on the road in the state.. So they're stepping up patrols. They're increasing DWI enforcement, as well as cracking down on Minnesota's "move over" law..

That means if you're on a road with two or more lanes, and see a stopped emergency vehicle with flashing lights.. You must keep at least one lane away from it.. Or face fines exceeding 100 dollars.

August 31st marks "move over day", after a trooper was killed in 2000.

Sgt. Jesse Grabow, with MN State Patrol, says, "it really should be common courtesy but that's another reason why we have this law because Trooper Ted Foss was killed 13 years ago on that date, so to bring awareness to that and to keep people informed."

The Labor Day weekend averages 6 traffic related deaths, and 500 DWI's in Minnesota.
