Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - After serving his country in Iraq, a local veteran is getting a piece of his “American Dream” with some help from Habitat for Humanity.

Today, Steven Bateman received the keys to his new home, built by the Lake Agassiz Habitat chapter this summer.

Bateman served in the U.S. army for five years, including a 10-month deployment in Iraq.

He says having a place to call home is an "extreme blessing."

Steven Bateman- Habitat Home Recipient: “Part of the American Dream, right? Home is a place that you own. It's part of your identification. Instead of borrowing a piece of somebody else's property to sleep in for the night, this is your place. You can do what you want with it.”

Bateman is now a full-time pharmacy student at NDSU and teaches math to veterans through the Upward Bound program.
