West Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - After drawn out negotiations in past years, West Fargo teachers signed a new two-year deal with the district with little fanfare Wednesday night.

It'll give teachers a more than nine percent raise in total compensation in that time; most of it coming in year two, when the district significantly bumps its contribution to teachers' retirement.

The district is trying to absorb the cost of adding 79 teachers this year. When a district sees significant growth, like West Fargo did again this year, help from state dollars doesn't come until the following year.

Dr. David Flowers- West Fargo Superintendent: “I think that the teachers are understanding of that we all wish that we would get funded in the year that we receive the students. The state took a step in implementing some enrollment growth dollars, but still we're not getting funded for all of the students that we're serving.”

A first-year teacher will start at more than $33,000.
