Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Expect to see more grasshoppers and crickets. A local extension officer says it's the perfect storm.

Janet Knodle, with NDSU's Entomologist Office says although the grasshoppers hatched later than usual, a hot and dry summer has helped them thrive.

In fact, they're now becoming a nuisance. In some cases eating the leaves of crops, like corn and soybeans.

Janet Knodle- NDSU Extension Entomologist: "Caulk up any cracks you may have in the foundation and that will help prevent them from getting in. If they're a real nuisance, you can do a perimeter spray around the outside of the house, usually go out 3 to 5 feet from the base of the house with a general outdoor insecticide."

If you'd rather not spray, Knodle says the insects will die off after a hard frost.
