Detroit Lakes, MN (WDAY TV)-- A brazen car theft at an auto dealership in Detroit Lakes, and now the owner is asking for your help.

Milt Hanson of Hanson Auto Sales is trying to track down two women he says drove off with an SUV, right from his lot. And they were caught on tape.

Police in Detroit Lakes tell me car thefts in town do happen, but say what really stands out about this case. Is it came Saturday afternoon, in broad daylight.

Milt Hanson has been running Hanson Auto Sales for more than 20 years, and not once has he seen something like this.

Milt Hanson- Hanson Auto Sales Owner: "Well I was really stunned."

He says the woman shown in this surveillance video came into his store Saturday afternoon with a friend, wanting to take a test drive.

Hanson: "She said she didn't have any money so I said well it isn't really going to do you much good then."

At first, Hanson didn't think much of it. Until he drove down the street to the business's other lot, and noticed this vehicle, a 2001 Mercury Mountaineer priced at nearly 3,000 was gone.

Hanson: "And that is the last we've seen of it"

Hanson says the car was parked right here in this empty space with the keys still inside, and very close to the lot's exit. making for a fast, easy escape.

Tim Eggebraaten- Detroit Lakes Police Chief: "We've had cars stolen from lots before."

But rarely stolen from lots in broad daylight, while other employees were swamped with other customers.

Eggebraaten: Makes it a little more unique than smashing out a window and taking a car that way

Hanson: "I just didn't anyone would have the nerve to do it like that"

So he's asking anyone who recognizes this woman.

Hanson: I hope they get caught and I get my car back.

To call police.

Again the vehicle is a 2001 Mercury Mountaineer valued around 3,000 dollars.

It had Minnesota plates with the number 078-HGK.

If you see it, contact the Detroit Lakes Police Department.
