West Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - As West Fargo students get ready to head back to school tomorrow, construction crews are hitting the pavement on Veterans Boulevard. Crews are trying to get as much work done as possible before the first day, but are still expecting backed up traffic come morning.
Right now out on Veterans Boulevard traffic levels don't seem too bad, but during the back to school rush tomorrow officials say if you don't have to, don't drive on Veterans.
Crews have been working to widen the road to 4 lanes, but right now only 1 lane in each direction is open. They're still trying to put in sidewalks and crosswalks and get intersections up and running.
The delay comes after a late start this spring, but hits right in time for parents and bus drivers dropping off children for the first day of school. Officials say access to the new Sheyenne High School and Liberty Middle School will be possible from Veterans, but advise anyone not dropping off a student to use a different route.
Kevin Bucholz - West Fargo City Engineer: "Any day, the first day of school, there's a lot of congestion. Not everybody knows exactly where to go, where to turn, where to drop off."
Jim Spielman - Dropping Off Daughter Tomorrow: "I'm sure they'll do their best tomorrow in guiding people in and out, but I'm sure a lot of people won't know exactly the flow and how they turn around and what not, so it will be interesting."
Both city engineers and officers from the West Fargo Police Department will be out here in the morning making sure things run smoothly. Police want to remind drivers they'll be increasing their patrol and enforcement on school zones beginning tomorrow and running through the week.
