Wheatland, MN (WDAY TV) - The Wheatland man accused of mistreating nearly 170 dogs at his puppy mill now faces criminal charges.
The Cass County State's Attorney has charged 51-year-old Darcy Smith with six counts of animal neglect, including depriving the animals of necessary food and water.
Last month, authorities seized nearly 170 dogs from Smith's property, many with matted fur and health issues and trapped in cages piled high in trailers with no air conditioning.
The charges took several weeks to come down because officials say they focused on trying to get the dogs into good homes first.
Smith faces a maximum of one year in prison and a $2,000 fine.
Leah Viste- Asst. State Attorney of Cass County: "Any charges that would stem from the same course of conduct would run concurrently, so whether you charged one count or 300 counts, ultimately, the consequence would be the same."
Animal neglect is a Class A Misdemeanor. If convicted, Smith faces a maximum of one year in prison and a $2,000 fine.
