JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) — The 130-year-old Jamestown College in southeastern North Dakota is changing its name to the University of Jamestown to reflect what school officials say are major strides in the educational offerings at the private institution.

The four-year liberal arts school now offers degrees at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels. Enrollment this fall is expected to be at a five-time high. The school has about 1,000 students from 31 states and 13 countries.

President Robert Badal said the change to "university" status also reflects the school's continued outreach with partners in Africa, China, South Korea and Vietnam, as well as the goal of increasing international student enrollment by 5 percent.

"Internationally, the term 'college' is often associated with secondary level education," Badal said in a statement Wednesday. "By adopting the university name, we are opening doors that will support our enrollment goals."

The school, established in 1883, has invested more than $24 million in campus construction and technology projects over the past decade.
