Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - A 77 year-old Moorhead man is claiming 3 Moorhead Police officers used excessive force. The officers tased the man twice during a welfare check 2 years ago.
That taser video was recorded. Before we show you it, Moorhead police chose not to go on camera today, but says it has done an internal review and exonerated the officers of any wrong doing.
The video is from August 23rd, in 2011. Police are on a welfare check at 77 year-old James Van Raden's home. He allegedly had been making suicidal comments.
The video is full of expletives. Van Raden told the officers that the stun gun could kill him because he has a heart condition. He is shocked twice during the incident.
After this incident, Van Raden was civilly committed to Prairie St. John's psychiatric hospital in Fargo for about 3 weeks. He's now demanding a jury trial and seeking unspecified damages. His attorney told him not to go on camera today.
Van Raden does have a criminal history, including attempted rape and aggravated assault from the 70s. In 1999 he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct.
