Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Thanks to the Fargo Marathon's "Shoes for Kids" campaign, a thousand kids in need around the metro will be getting a brand new pair of shoes this year.

Money for the campaign was raised from the 5K event of this year's marathon. One dollar was set aside for each runner that participated in the 5K, which was then matched by both Blue Cross Blue Shield and the Dakota Medical Foundation. The total funds were then used to purchase Nike running shoes for children in Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo elementary schools.

Judd Wagner - Chief Marketing Officer, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota: "At Blue Cross we feel it's really important for North Dakotans to lead healthier lives. If you're going to make an investment in leading healthier lives, children are an absolutely fantastic place to start."

Wagner says he hopes to raise even more money to buy more shoes for kids next year.
