Glyndon, MN (WDAY TV) - They are celebrating in Glyndon, Minnesota tonight. It’s a way for family and friends of Ethan Mjolsness to honor the 22 year-old for his courage and determination during a 14 year battle with cancer.
When Karleen Mjolsness learned her 8 year-old boy would have a vicious cancer fight on his hands, she never dreamed that at age 22 he would still be waging war on a type of cancer that sparks tumors in his brain and spine.
Karleen Mjolsness – Ethan’s Mom: “He always sets a goal and he pushes forward to it. Right now college graduation is top of the line there, so - one more year.”
One reason for the benefit tonight is that over the years, Ethan and his family have always said no to fundraisers.
Ethan Mjolsness: “I don’t want to be different from the other kids. I’ve always wanted to be normall.”
But tonight, as Ethan recovers from his 9th cancer surgery - his brain - and his ongoing radiation, the community is honoring him for his determination; a personality and perseverance that has him thinking positive, despite a diagnosis.
Ethan Mjolsness: “I’ve always said since the first time when I was young, ‘It’s just part of life.’ It’s really nothing special. I’ve been doing it so long, it’s just, ‘Oh, whatever. Here we go.’”
Karleen Mjolsness: “We don't know from day to day.”
Now, Ethan has gone from cancer patient to cancer survivor-mentor.
Ethan Mjolsness: “I always considered my cancer to be one of the least threatening one compared to some of the kids I’ve seen at camp.”
Ethan is a counselor at Camp Kace, an area get away for children battling cancer. His experience and his drive is rubbing off on a new generation battling the disease
