GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — The Grand Forks Public School District is asking for a nearly 29 percent increase in property taxes.
School district officials tell the Grand Forks Herald that the request is due to growing student enrollment and an unfair distribution formula for state money. Officials say they ended the last school year a $6 million deficit.
The increase comes after a property tax relief measure was approved by the state Legislature earlier this year. Republican Sen. Ray Holmberg of Grand forks says the district should be paying for the deficits by reducing the amount of cash it has on hand, rather than taking it from taxpayers.
Superintendent of schools Larry Nybladh says the district had 230 news students last year and "didn't receive a dime of state money" for them.
