Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- If you are sick, being stressed out could be hindering your recovery.
A New York Times bestselling author spoke in Fargo this morning on why the mind is an essential healthcare tool.
On average, we have 50 stress responses every day, and that can take a toll on our health.
Dr. Lissa Rankin says getting over that stress and participating in our own recovery has major healing powers.
She outlines the concepts in her New York Times bestselling book, "Mind Over Medicine."
Lissa Rankin- M.D. Author: "Our bodies have natural self-repair mechanisms that can handle almost anything the body faces. But they're disabled whenever the body is in stress response."
The Center for Disease Control estimates that a whopping 90-percent of doctor's visits are triggered by STRESS.
Rankin: "Perhaps the treatment that they need isn't so much pharmaceuticals or surgery, it's getting out of their toxic relationships or extricating themselves from their soul-sucking jobs."
Dr. Susan Mathison hosted the conversation with Rankin, which drew doctors, patients, and alternative healthcare practitioners.
Dr. Sue Matheson- Catalyst Medical Center: "We strive to live a life that maybe isn't so sustainable. So, I think Lissa Rankin has an important message about writing your own prescription for health."
Rankin says she is by no means against going to the hospital or taking medication. But rather, she thinks people can combine the best of both worlds.
Rankin: "Part of what is missing from healthcare is that we need to help our patients address their lives. They need soul medicine."
Rankin was in town for this weekend's TEDX gathering.
