MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — The Mandan City Commission has withdrawn a proposed 1,000-acre annexation of land north of the city because of objections from area residents.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that commissioners have directed City Attorney Malcolm Brown to draft a downsized proposal involving a little less than 900 acres of land. It will be the city's third attempt at annexation in the area since 2007.

Mayor Arlyn Van Beek says it's obvious that growth to the north is happening rapidly. There is a new middle school in the area, as well as a medical clinic and a Walmart currently under construction.
