Fargo ranks second best city for small business

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Forbes ranks Fargo as the second best city in America for doing small business.

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Forbes ranks Fargo as the second best city in America for doing small business.

The site also lists our region in the top 5 cities for growing job opportunities. The Chamber of commerce says it's not surprised.

Many people I talked with today say it's no secret. Fargo's business is booming. A company downtown, which has been open for nearly a hundred years says it's all about keeping customers happy.

Bruce Froseth- Fargo Linoleum Co: "I came here from school at two o clock."

This long-time salesman remembers his first day at work.

Froseth: "there's gotta be an easier way of making a living that this."

That was over 40 years ago. But here I am still here."

Bruce Froseth began selling for Fargo Linoleum Company back in 1971. But the company is even older.

Froseth: "i've been here long enough that I remember when Herbst was downtown and pennys and delandrecies."

It first opened back in 1926. One of the oldest remaining small businesses in Fargo.

But only one of thousands to pop up over the coming decades. And for good reason.

Craig Whitney- FM Chamber: "the cost of living, the cost of doing business, I think perhaps the biggest reason they're doing it is because of the people."

94,000 of those people are employers, 90% of them are small business owners.

And according to the FM Chamber, those numbers will only grow.

Whitney: "small business is and will remain and always has been really at the forefront and the backbone of what America is all about."

Fargo Linoleum Company admits, owning and operating a business like this it's not easy. There's certain criteria you must meet. Like keeping your promises to your customers so they'll come back. Froseth has been around long enough to know.

Froseth: "I remember when the kids were this high. Now they're this high. But it's fun."

Fargo isn't the only city in the Midwest to make the list. Bismarck came in at 4th, while Sioux Falls, South Dakota topped the chart for best city in the nation for doing small business.
