Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Former Fargo Mayor Bruce Furness has thrown his name into the hat in consideration for the North Dakota University System interim chancellor position.

Furness is one of fifteen candidates applying.

The board in charge of hiring an interim chancellor says it hopes to have the list of candidates narrowed down to 8 by the end of this month with the interim chancellor starting near late September.

Furness says his number one concern is to rebuild and stabilize what has become a tarnished reputation within the university.

Bruce Furness- Former Fargo Mayor: "We need to re-establish the credibility that the board had, all the press that they've gotten, the media coverage on there closed meetings and so forth I think has not served them well at all. I think they need to foster better relations not only within the college system but with legislators."

University spokesman say the interim position will go through a November 2014 vote, in which residents will decide whether or not to do away with the higher education board.
