Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- It's hard to improve on a defense that was number one in the nation last season, but NDSU may just do that this season. That's thanks to the return of former all-conference player Colten Heagle.

Heagle is back at full strength after missing the final 13 games of last season when he tore his ACL.

Heagle established himself as one of the best players in the conference with his performance against Georgia Southern two years ago and after having to sit and watch his teammates win a 2nd title, he couldn't wait to get back into practice.

Colten Heagle- NDSU Junior Strong Safety: "Last year was obviously tough to see them but I did as much as I could good to be back, don't think I missed out on anything, sucks to sit out and watch them play when you can't do anything about it, just being out here, being with your teammates is good."

Chris Klieman- NDSU Defensive Coordinator: "So happy for him best thing about it is he doesn't have to wear the knee brace that's a thing I notice talked all last spring don't need to wear the brace, he's doing a great job, back to where he was."

Bryan Shepherd started in Heagle's spot at strong safety last year, each could be on the field in certain situations.
