Fargo could soon ease up on liquor ordinances

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Mayor Dennis Walaker says Fargo has one of the strictest liquor laws in the state.

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Mayor Dennis Walaker says Fargo has one of the strictest liquor laws in the state, but soon the city could ease up, as it's looking to rewrite the ordinance.

It all began when Cashwise applied for a license to build a new store to sell alcohol. The problem is, the new shop is close to competition and the neighboring store says the economic impact would be detrimental.

The Spirit Shop has been working nearly a half a year to keep the city's ordinance the same. For now, it states 14 different factors to consider, but Fargo is looking to amend two key points.

Erik Johnson - Fargo Commissioner: "Economic impact upon other license premises is removed from this list of factors."

The 100 foot rule would evolve to let owners build a liquor store within proximity to their first business. The Spirit Shop thinks that would escalate problems.

Jade Roosevelt - Spirit Shop Representative: "There is some concern about having off-sale retail liquor outlets in close proximity to one another."

Fargo police agree. The force has concerns of criminal acts rising if the two shops are so close.

A representative for Cashwise says safety is a concern. When it comes to competition, it may be stiff, but it wouldn't be the first time it's happened.

The end is far from in sight. The Spirit Shop plans to keep working towards a resolution.

Commissioners couldn't come to a conclusion tonight. The topic will be revisited in two weeks.
