Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - The Moorhead City Council is up against a tall task for the upcoming year, as members try to balance a budget that right now is half a million dollars in the hole.

It's nothing new for Moorhead, which has dealt with budget woes for the past several years because of state funding cuts. The state funding has come back a bit for 2014. Still, the city needs to make up more than $500,000.

Leaders are trying to look at new ways to bring in revenue so that money doesn't solely fall on taxes. One idea is a street light utility fee. If every resident was charged $3 a month, it'd cover that half million dollars.

Michael Redlinger - Moorhead City Manager: "We're going to do everything we can to keep quality services. We're going to keep plowing the snow, keep mowing the grass and do the things we do, but we have to find some opportunities for modest reduction and also address our debt needs."

The final budget won't be passed until December.
