MEDORA, N.D. (AP) — The third of four planned wilderness hikes at Theodore Roosevelt National Park will take sightseers to the north unit's petrified forest.

Park officials say the forest is a remote and seldom visited area that has become a favorite destination of summer hikers.

Depending on group size and weather, the outing will last from three to six hours and cover two to six miles. Hikers are encouraged to wear sturdy closed-toed boots and durable clothes.

The event is scheduled to start at the picnic area at the Juniper campground on Sunday at 9 a.m.

The final wilderness hike of the summer season is set for Sept. 1.
