Couples can't believe the day finally came, when they could be legally married

Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) -- Same sex marriage in Minnesota is now legal, and 18 couples wasted no time tying the knot at a special midnight ceremony held at the Clay County Courthouse.

Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) -- Same sex marriage in Minnesota is now legal, and 18 couples wasted no time tying the knot at a special midnight ceremony held at the Clay County Courthouse.

Couples and their families were greeted by hundreds of supporters. People chanted and cheered them on, they held signs and blew bubbles. The couples here are some of the first Minnesotans to say I do.

Minnesota became the 12th state to legalize same-sex marriage following a two-year political battle, But at the ceremony the spotlight was on the couples. Couples we spoke to say they cant believe this day is finally here.

Christopher Fritz who got married at the special ceremony says, "it, it's great, you know our family and friends support us already and now that we are recognized by our state, it's fantastic and I'm proud to be a part of Minnesota now."

Minnesota estimates about 5,000 same sex couples will marry during the law's first year.
