JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) — Authorities say a guard at a Jamestown jail is hospitalized after he was severely beaten by an inmate.

Highway Patrol Captain Bryan Niewind tells KFGO radio (http://bit.ly/19vKmmx) that guard Jerimiah McDonald was airlifted to a Bismarck hospital with severe head injuries. The incident happened Sunday at the James River Correctional Center.

Niewind identified the suspect as inmate Shawn Ostafin, who has not been charged.

Ostafin, formerly of Mandan, has a violent criminal history. He served a lengthy sentenced for the 1990 murders of his father and stepfather and is now serving time for terrorizing.

McDonald's condition was not available.
