Hawley, MN (WDAY TV)-- Tonight, we know what caused the fire in Hawley,
early Sunday morning, that killed a 15-year old.
Investigators say it was caused by the ignition of materials surrounding an improperly installed electrical outlet. Fifteen year-old Rylie Efterfield did not make it out of the flames.
Ever since they learned of her death, Rylie's closest friends are coming together to create a living memorial of their best friend. They made crosses with personal messages for Riley and set them up right outside the family's home.
Throughout the day, several people stopped to write on the crosses or drop off flowers for Rylie.
Lieutenant Stephen Landsem- Clay County Investigations: "Smoke detectors are probably the number one thing. Make sure the batteries are fully charged in your smoke detectors and make sure they work. At least once a year, if not more."
Malia Bortnem- Rylie's Best Friend: "It makes me really happy that so many people cared about her and that the community works together to support the family and making donations and trying to help."
